One in two cats will get cancer. One in three dogs. Performance horses are kept in stalls, fed processed kibble-equivalent feed, and pushed to their physical limits — and still their cancer rates don't come close. Jackie Jolie spent two decades in that world before realizing what the differentiating variable was. It wasn't diet. It wasn't genetics. It was light.
Jackie Jolie is an equine and canine bodyworker with close to 20 years of experience in animal rehabilitation and performance. After healing her own Lyme disease and persistent hormonal dysfunction through quantum biology and changes to her light environment — without hormone replacement — she founded AnimaSol (formerly EquiSol) to bring red and near-infrared light therapy to dogs, cats, and horses. Find her at animasol.life.
    What You'll Learn
Why cancer rates in cats and dogs have reached epidemic levels — and what domesticated horses can teach us about the root cause
How red and near-infrared light interact with the mitochondria to produce energy, reduce inflammation, and accelerate tissue repair
The surprising connection between light exposure and blood sugar — and why 10 minutes of red/NIR light can shift your metabolic markers
Why agricultural science has been demonstrating light's hormonal power for generations — and what that means for your pets (and you)
How to think about red and near-infrared light as a supplement your pet is already deficient in, regardless of age or diagnosis
Two detailed case studies: a fully paralyzed Yorkshire Terrier who walked in 10 days, and a severe peroneal hernia that resolved without surgery in six months
What to look for in a red light therapy device — and why near-infrared must be included alongside red wavelengths

    Key Concepts
Photobiomodulation (PBM): The use of red and near-infrared light to stimulate biological processes at the cellular level. Over 7,000 peer-reviewed studies and counting. Also called red light therapy, though that term technically covers only part of the spectrum.
Red vs. Near-Infrared: Red light (roughly 620–700nm) penetrates 5–10mm — effective for skin, collagen, and surface circulation. Near-infrared (700–1100nm) reaches bone marrow, nerves, and deep soft tissue. Effective devices include both.
Mitochondria: The cellular organelles responsible for producing ATP (energy), structured water, and heat. Red and NIR light directly stimulate the mitochondrial electron transport chain, making these processes faster and more efficient. Mitochondrial health is now understood to be central to metabolic, immune, and neurological function.
Redox Potential: A measure of the body's ability to manage oxidative stress and mount immune responses. Jackie's Lyme disease episode, she argues, was made possible by years of lowered redox from light deficiency — and subsequent tick bites produced no illness once her redox was restored.
Light Deficiency: The premise that modern indoor living has created a systemic, near-universal deficiency in red and near-infrared wavelengths — wavelengths that would have been available essentially continuously in an outdoor ancestral environment. Framed by researchers as the "21st century scurvy."
    Resources Mentioned
Glenn Jeffery — Researcher whose work includes the finding that 10 minutes of red/NIR light exposure reduces blood sugar by 30%; also the ICU study showing patients receiving red/NIR left intensive care 30% faster. (University College London)
Scott Zimmerman — Colleague of Jeffery's; has described chronic red/NIR light deficiency as analogous to scurvy — a foundational deficiency driving widespread dysfunction
Jack Kruse — Neurosurgeon and quantum biology educator whose work on light, water, and magnetism introduced Jackie to this field
Jim Laird — Strength coach who connected Jackie to quantum biology; previous QBC guest
AnimaSol — Jackie's company; red and near-infrared light therapy blankets for dogs, cats, and horses. animasol.life

"Almost everyone in the modern world is running on 50% capacity and not even realizing it."
"Wild animals don't need to think about what they're doing, they just do it. And they do it because it feels good and it feels right."
"There are insights that you can only get when your mind is sufficiently trained in a breadth of areas."
Cameron Borg is a science communicator and host of the Ricci Flow podcast — and one of the clearest translators working at the intersection of quantum biology and real-world health. In this conversation, we go deep: from the philosophical foundations of why all biology is quantum biology, to the specific mechanism by which near-infrared light powers your mitochondria, to the impossible-to-prove-but-impossible-to-ignore question of non-native EMFs. And then Cameron lands it all in the most practical place possible. Stop overthinking it. Go outside.
Cameron Borg is the host of the Ricci Flow podcast, where he interviews scientists, researchers, and practitioners at the frontier of biology, physics, and human health. Known for his ability to translate complex science into clear, grounded thinking, Cameron has spoken with some of the leading figures in quantum biology, circadian medicine, and bioenergetics. He is based in Sweden and writes on Substack.
    What You'll Learn
Why calling it "quantum biology" implies there's a non-quantum biology — and why that framing is the field's biggest problem
How near-infrared light does a "random walk" through your body, donating vibrational energy to the electron transport chain along the way
Why your body evolved to be transparent in the exact wavelength range where most solar photons land — and what that means for metabolism
The Prigogine story: how a classically trained pianist won the Nobel Prize by asking a question physicists weren't asking
Why non-native EMFs are a hyper-novel exposure — not just more of what we've always had, but something our entire evolutionary line has never encountered
Why trying to understand this scientifically often makes people do it worse — and what to do instead
Cameron's actual daily approach: surprisingly lax, and entirely grounded in evolutionary logic

    Key Concepts Glossary
Near-infrared light (NIR): Wavelengths (~700–1400nm) that fall in a tissue and water transparency window, allowing penetration deep into the body rather than being absorbed at the surface.
Electron transport chain (ETC): A series of mitochondrial protein complexes that transfer electrons to produce ATP. NIR photons appear to lower the activation energy thresholds between steps.
Principle of superposition: When two electromagnetic fields occupy the same space, they combine into a new, different field. External non-native EMFs superimpose on the body's own endogenous field, altering it.
Negentropy: The capacity of living systems to maintain or increase order, apparently opposing the second law of thermodynamics.
Hyper-novel exposure: An environmental stimulus not just quantitatively different from ancestral norms, but categorically new — something our entire evolutionary lineage has never encountered.

What if your light environment was the missing variable in your healing journey? In this episode, Jai Kapoor and Daniel White — co-founders of InRhythm and two people who reversed serious autoimmune conditions through circadian biology — share one of the most remarkable recovery stories we've ever featured. You'll learn why circadian rhythms behave like biological infrastructure rather than a lifestyle tip, what infrared light does that modern LEDs can't, and why the future of human health may look less like a supplement stack and more like water sanitation.

171: The 49ers EMF Story That Broke the Internet: Why Are Elite Athletes Falling Apart?

Peter Cowan: the quantum biology practitioner, former WiFi firmware engineer, musician, and self-described high school dropout who sparked a global conversation about EMFs and injuries. A single post on X connecting the San Francisco 49ers' alarming injury rate to the electromagnetic fields generated by a nearby electrical substation exploded to over 22 million views, landed in the Washington Post, and was covered by mainstream media all over the world.
In this episode Peter unpacks the biophysical mechanisms behind his hypothesis, explaining how non-native electromagnetic fields disrupt the mitochondrial electron transport chain, trigger oxidative stress, reduce cellular water production, and ultimately compromise the structural integrity of collagen: the connective tissue that tendons, ligaments, and fascia depend on. He then layers in the circadian dimension: how late-night screen exposure, high-kelvin stadium lighting, cross-country travel, and disrupted sleep cycles impair the very repair processes collagen needs to stay strong.
Throughout, Peter and Meredith reflect on what this moment means: the declining authority of legacy media, the power of citizen researchers & journalists willing to take public risks, and the growing appetite among ordinary people for answers that the mainstream medical system isn't providing.
    5 Key Takeaways
Electromagnetic fields can disrupt mitochondrial function, leading to tissue damage.
Circadian rhythms are crucial for cellular repair, especially in collagen and tendons.
Citizen research can uncover environmental health issues overlooked by mainstream media.
Reducing EMF exposure and optimizing light exposure can improve health and resilience.
Chronic illnesses often result from multiple stressors, including environmental and lifestyle factors.

    Memorable Quotes
"I never said the substation was the only reason the 49ers are injured. I also never said it was the most important reason. But nobody reads.""It's never one thing. Stressors add on top of each other. And at some point it's the straw that broke the camel's back.""Collagen is 99.7% water by molecular count. The water in collagen is structural — it's not just there to make it wet."Connect with Peter Cowan
