14/09/2026 | 59 minDiving deep into all things ’90s… From Kate Moss and Keanu Reeves to Blur, Britpop and climate change, the original style mag The Face celebrated youth culture as well as spotlighting social change. Founded by former NME editor Nick Logan in May 1980, it paved the way for titles like i-D and Dazed. When Nick fell ill in the mid-80s, Sheryl Garrett stepped up to become editor, and under her and art director Phil Bicker it became the face of everything cool in ’90s music, fashion, film and culture.
When they put a Corrine Day shot of a fresh-faced young girl on the May 1990 cover, The Face launched Kate Moss’s career. From jungle to Britpop, Harlesden to Hollywood, the mag was there creating stories and shoots that still resonate today. Sheryl joins us to discuss life at the epicentre of Cool Britannia, how they knew Kate Moss was a star, and the infamous Jason Donovan lawsuit which nearly folded the magazine for good.

Fronting The Girlie Show with Sara Cox before moving onto Singled Out, Live and Kicking, Top of the Pops and Night Fever, she represented everything a smart carefree ’90s woman could be. But behind the scenes it wasn’t that easy.
Sarah had to prove herself against misogyny of the era: when her male co-hosts decided move on, Sarah would be asked to leave too. And even though The Girlie Show had a magnetic all-female lineup, an anarchic format and a cult audience it was came from a male perspective that doesn’t sit well today.
Sarah Cawood joins Miranda Sawyer to dig into the highs and lows of 90s TV, explain why she’s decided to document the era on Substack, and says why she’ll always be a rebellious indie kid at heart. Sign up to support us on Patreon for extra material too.

24/08/2026 | 1 hDiving deep into all things ’90s… A regular on the decks at Turnmills, Fabric, Ministry of Sound, The Haçienda, Space, Amnesia, Privilege and Panorama Bar, the legendary Smokin Jo is the only woman ever (!!) to win DJ Mag’s coveted DJ of the Year award.
After a painful childhood, she found herself and her family at gay raves, plus a new career and a lifelong obsession. But where were the female DJs? Jo tells Miranda how she took matters into her own hands and became an inspiration to generations of women – as you can read in her autobiography, You Don’t Need A Dick To DJ. Driven, free-spirited and dedicated to the decks, Jo has spent her life performing… when she’s not teaching yoga to Nick Clegg. More of that in the episode!
