If you’re wondering why this episode is called thank you and good night it is because it is the final episode.I’ve had an absolute fantastic time. I’ve met some incredible people hosting this podcast since it first started in August 2019 not just as guests but as listeners and also at all the runs I've taken part in. It was only meant to help me complete the Classic Quarter which I did in May 2021 so it should’ve finished over 3 1/2 years ago .But here we are at episode number 173 and of course it was almost by sheer chance that this whole journey started.Back in February 2019 I was invited to speak at a business conference. The headline speaker was a guy called Jim Lawless who talked about a concept he had created called TamingTigers which essentially was about setting yourself challenges way beyond your comfort zone.Whilst listening to Jim, I was conscious that I was just over two years away from a landmark birthday for which I had been thinking about running a third career marathon, the previous two being in 2005 and 2010. Listening to Jim I realised that wasn’t a Taming Tigers enough challenge. For some reason the name Classic Quarter popped up into my head and I looked it up over lunchtime to discover that it was a coastal path run from Lizard Point, which is relatively close to where I was living when my children were growing up, to Lands End. Undoubtedly the Taming Tigers bit was discovering it was 44 miles!I started calling the challenge 44 at 60 and as I already had a business podcast I decided that the best way to learn how to take on this challenge was to start a podcast so I could record all the great advice I knew I would be given. The first episode which was basically an introduction episode went live in August 2019, with episode two being my first ever coastal path race - the White Rat. My first guest was the fabulous Andy Goundry who told me ultrarunning was an eating competition not a running competition and to make sure that I walked up all the hills in the race, but to run up all of them in training and keep smiling! Without doubt this podcast was a massive factor in achieving my goal of finishing the Classic Quarter and along the way raising over £7000 for the children’s hospice Southwest and postrace writing the book 12 business lessons from running an ultra marathon. So many fantastic guests, so many great running adventures and so many great running community friends. I feel very privileged to have been able to do this. Thank you everyone - it's been a blast! Arc 50 - what happened - 6 runners tell all
So here we are recording on Monday January 27th - 2 days after the Arc 50 So what happened to our group - Richard, Anya, Himani, Tom, Nicky and Matt? Each has a story to tellSome made itSome didn’tWhat would they all do differently? And what are they doing next? It has been fantastic being part of this group - behind the scenes the What’s app group the 7 of us are part of has been virtually every day for the past 2.5 months full of encouragement, support, advice and help. And most of us met in person for the first time at either Friday registration or at 5am on the Saturday in the barn at HQ waiting for the coaches to the Minack You can access and download the previous 171 episodes of this show via your usual podcast app or on the Running 44@60 podcast page. I ran my first, and so far only completed, ultra marathon in 2021 - the 44 mile Classic Quarter - to celebrate a landmark birthday which was a few weeks before the run. This podcast started as a way of me learning how to do that - hence why it’s called Running 44@60. The adventure then turned into a book and as a business consultant it became both a business and running book and is available on Amazon via this link: 12 Business Lessons from Running an Ultra Marathon. My run raised over £7000 for Childrens Hospice South West Music Therapy programme and every book bought on Amazon generates another £5 for the programme. 3 days to the Arc of Attrition
Just 3 days to go to the Arc of Attrition 50 - I've been planning all the sections - estimating times for each one, making notes of landmarks to take with me, getting all the kit ready for registration check on Friday. And with no running for four weeks I've been eating, sleeping, watching Arc of Attrition You Tube videos and listening to previous episodes of this podcast which featured the Arc 50.My plan is to be on the start line and see how we go from there.I want to have a grand day out and I'll be recording for this podcast as part of that.Looking at my timing estimates ensuring I get to St Ives in time to change shoes etc and leave by 5.15pm could be very tight. Good luck to all of you taking part. Run with a smile on your face and enjoy your day!
