Sarah Edmondson, the NXIVM whistleblower whose courage helped bring down Keith Raniere, returns to Reality Life to talk about her new book, A Little Bit Culty: Navigating Cults, Control and Coercion. Sarah spent twelve years inside NXIVM and recruited more than two thousand people before she was branded in the secret group DOS and went to authorities and The New York Times. Her story became central to HBO's The Vow. In this conversation, they discuss what she has learned since leaving, how she and her husband Nippy have made it their life's work to help survivors heal through their podcast A Little Bit Culty, and why smart, ambitious people can be drawn into high-control groups one reasonable-seeming step at a time. She also talks about the red flags everyone should know, the long road of recovery, and what she hopes readers take away from the book.

Neil Berkeley, director of Netflix's Who Is Martin Mull?, joins Kate to talk about the comedian, actor, musician, and painter best known for Clue, Mr. Mom, Fernwood Tonight, and Roseanne, whose true passion was painting. Neil explains how the documentary began with Bob Saget, stalled after Saget's death, and found new life when he stepped in to film Martin alone, with no crew, just months before Martin passed away. We discuss Martin's painful relationship with his father and how it surfaced in his art, his friendships with Fred Willard, Norman Lear, and Steve Martin, and the emotional moment his wife, Wendy, learns what Martin said about her on camera. Neil also previews his next Netflix film, Paralyzed by Hope: The Maria Bamford Story, made with Judd Apatow and out October 23.

Carl Kurlander, co-writer of St. Elmo's Fire, returns for the second half of Kate’s conversation about the making of the 1985 Brat Pack classic. Carl reveals how close Madonna came to playing Jules, why a real-life friend refused to lend his name to Emilio Estevez's character, and the scientific embarrassment hidden in Rob Lowe's famous St. Elmo's Fire monologue. He sets the record straight on the night the "Brat Pack" was born and the article that haunted the cast for decades. Carl also shares the surprising true story behind John Parr's hit theme song, which was inspired by Paralympian Rick Hansen's Man in Motion tour, and how a poster shoot with a miserable cast became one of the most iconic images of the '80s. Plus, Carl takes us from Hollywood to the Clinton campaign, Saved by the Bell, and his second act as a professor and documentary filmmaker in Pittsburgh.

Carl Kurlander, co-writer of St. Elmo's Fire, joins me for the first of a two-part conversation about the true story behind the 1985 Brat Pack classic. It all started with a summer job as a bellhop at the St. Elmo Hotel in Chautauqua, New York, and a waitress named Lynn he couldn't stop thinking about. Carl takes us from an 18-page short story he mailed to her, to a freak scholarship at Universal Studios, to fetching gazpacho for director Joel Schumacher, the mentor who would become his co-writer and, at times, his tormentor. He reveals how a blizzard drive from Cleveland to D.C., a laundry room in an anarchist collective, and a disastrous night on Mulholland Drive all ended up on screen.
