Im April 2016 sahen Millionen Japaner etwas Seltsames im Fernsehen: Über hundert Mitarbeiter einer Eisfirma verbeugten sich tief vor der Kamera – und baten ganz Japan um Verzeihung.

Der Grund? Ihr Kinder-Eis Garigari-kun wurde um zehn Yen teurer. Von sechzig auf siebzig Yen – umgerechnet etwa sechs Cent.

Die Firma Akagi Nyugyo hatte den Preis bewusst niedrig gehalten, damit sich jedes Kind das Eis leisten kann. Fünfundzwanzig Jahre lang kostete es nur sechzig Yen, obwohl alles andere teurer wurde.

Schon 1991 hatten sie den Preis einmal erhöht – von fünfzig auf sechzig Yen. Damals ließ die Firma ihr Maskottchen Garigari-kun selbst um Entschuldigung bitten. Aber 2016 sagten sie: Es ist nicht seine Schuld, sondern unsere.

Das Video wurde über eine Million Mal angeklickt. Viele Zuschauer schrieben: „Es sind doch nur zehn Yen!“ Der Verkauf stieg danach um zehn Prozent.

Natürlich mussten sie den Preis später wieder erhöhen – und verbeugten sich 2024 noch tiefer als zuvor. Diesmal verrieten sie mit einem Grinsen, dass sie künftige Entschuldigungen bereits im Voraus gefilmt hatten, weil das billiger sei.

Das Firmenmotto lautet: „Lasst uns Spaß haben.“ Offenbar gilt das auch für Preiserhöhungen.

In April 2016, millions of Japanese people saw something strange on television: over a hundred employees of an ice cream company bowed deeply before the camera – and asked all of Japan for forgiveness.

The reason? Their children's popsicle Garigari-kun was going up by ten yen. From sixty to seventy yen – roughly six cents.

The company Akagi Nyugyo had deliberately kept the price low so that every child could afford the ice cream. For twenty-five years it cost only sixty yen, even though everything else got more expensive.

Back in 1991, they had raised the price once – from fifty to sixty yen. At that time, the company let their mascot Garigari-kun himself apologize. But in 2016 they said: it's not his fault, it's ours.

The video was clicked over a million times. Many viewers wrote: "It's only ten yen!" Sales rose by ten percent afterward.

Of course, they had to raise the price again later – and in 2024 they bowed even deeper than before. This time they revealed with a grin that they had already pre-filmed future apologies, because that was cheaper.

The company motto is: "Let's have fun." Apparently, that also applies to price increases.

In einem Restaurant bei Mailand reservierst du einen Tisch, aber zuerst musst du durch eine Sicherheitskontrolle. Denn dieses Restaurant liegt in einem Gefängnis.

Es heißt „InGalera". Die Köche und die Kellner sind Häftlinge. Trotzdem kommen die Gäste gern und zahlen für ihr Essen.

Die Idee hatte Silvia Polleri. Sie führt seit Jahren ein Catering-Unternehmen und wollte den Gefangenen eine echte Arbeit geben.

2015 öffnete „InGalera" im Gefängnis von Bollate – das erste Restaurant dieser Art in Italien.

Die Häftlinge lernen an einer Hotelfachschule kochen und servieren. So bekommen sie einen richtigen Beruf und sind wieder stolz.

Am Abend tragen die Männer saubere Hemden und bringen den Gästen feine Gerichte. Für ein paar Stunden zählt nicht ihre Vergangenheit, sondern ihre Arbeit.

Und das Projekt wirkt. In Bollate werden viel weniger Menschen wieder kriminell als im Rest des Landes.

Silvia Polleri sagt: „Wir sind keine Abenteurer. Wir sind Pioniere."

Ein gutes Essen kann also mehr sein als ein gutes Essen. Manchmal ist es eine zweite Chance.

In a restaurant near Milan you book a table – but first you have to pass a security check. Because this restaurant is inside a prison.

It's called "InGalera." The cooks and the waiters are inmates. Even so, the guests come happily and pay for their meal.

The idea was Silvia Polleri's. She has run a catering company for years and wanted to give the prisoners real work.

In 2015 "InGalera" opened in Bollate prison – the first restaurant of its kind in Italy.

The inmates learn to cook and serve at a hotel school. So they get a real profession and are proud again.

In the evening the men wear clean shirts and bring the guests fine dishes. For a few hours, what counts is not their past but their work.

And the project works. In Bollate far fewer people reoffend than in the rest of the country.

Silvia Polleri says: "We are not adventurers. We are pioneers."

So a good meal can be more than a good meal. Sometimes it's a second chance.

Im Mai 2011 findet João einen Pinguin am Strand seiner Insel bei Rio de Janeiro. Der Vogel hat überall Öl. Er ist fast tot.

João ist 71 Jahre alt. Er ist Rentner. Früher war er Maurer. Manchmal fischt er. Aber er nimmt den kleinen Pinguin mit nach Hause, wäscht das Öl ab und gibt ihm jeden Tag Fische.

Nach einer Woche geht es dem Pinguin besser, aber er will nicht gehen. Er bleibt einfach bei João, viele Monate lang. João nennt ihn Dindim.

Dann bekommt Dindim neue Federn, und eines Tages ist er weg. Die Nachbarn sagen zu João: „Das war es. Pinguine kommen nicht zurück."

Aber im nächsten Juni steht Dindim wieder am Strand. Er geht direkt zu Joãos Haus. Er kennt den Weg! João kann es nicht glauben.

Seitdem kommt Dindim jedes Jahr zurück. Er schwimmt 8000 Kilometer von Patagonien nach Brasilien. Er bleibt acht Monate bei João. Dann schwimmt er wieder zurück.

Der lange Weg ist nicht besonders. Pinguine schwimmen immer weit. Aber Dindim schwimmt nicht zu irgendeinem Strand. Er kommt jedes Jahr zu João zurück.

ENGLISH:

In May 2011, João finds a penguin on the beach of his island near Rio de Janeiro. The bird has oil all over it. It is nearly dead.

João is 71 years old. He is retired. He used to be a bricklayer. Sometimes he fishes. But he takes the little penguin home, washes off the oil, and feeds him fish every day.

After a week, the penguin feels better, but he doesn't want to leave. He simply stays with João, for many months. João names him Dindim.

Then Dindim gets new feathers, and one day he's gone. The neighbors tell João: "That was it. Penguins don't come back."

But the following June, Dindim is standing on the beach again. He goes straight to João's house. He knows the way! João can't believe it.

Since then, Dindim comes back every year. He swims 8,000 kilometers from Patagonia to Brazil. He stays eight months with João. Then he swims back again.

The long journey isn't special. Penguins always swim far. But Dindim doesn't swim to just any beach. He comes back to João, every year.

Rafea kann nicht lesen und nicht schreiben. Trotzdem baut sie heute Solaranlagen und bringt Licht in Häuser, die noch nie Strom hatten.

Rafea lebt mit ihren Töchtern in einem armen Dorf in der jordanischen Wüste. Am Abend gibt es dort nur Dunkelheit.

Eines Tages bekommt sie eine große Chance: Sie darf nach Indien reisen, an eine besondere Schule namens Barefoot College.

Dort lernen Frauen aus vielen Ländern, wie man Solartechnik baut. Sie sprechen verschiedene Sprachen, und viele können nicht lesen.

Deshalb lernen sie ohne Worte – mit Zeichen, Farben und den eigenen Händen. Sechs Monate lang lötet Rafea kleine Teile zusammen.

Ein Filmteam begleitet Rafea. Ihre Reise wird später im Dokumentarfilm „Solar Mama“ gezeigt. Danach kehrt sie als Solar-Ingenieurin in ihr Dorf zurück.

Sie steigt auf die Dächer, montiert die Panels und verbindet die Kabel. Und plötzlich haben die Familien am Abend Licht.

Später zeigt sie auch anderen Frauen, wie es funktioniert. So wird aus einer Schülerin eine Lehrerin.

Man braucht also keine Schrift, um etwas Großes zu schaffen. Manchmal reichen zwei Hände und der Mut, es zu versuchen.

Rafea can't read and can't write. And yet she builds solar systems today and brings light to houses that never had electricity.

Rafea lives with her daughters in a poor village in the Jordanian desert. In the evening there is only darkness. One day she gets a big chance: she may travel to India, to a special school called Barefoot College.

There, women from many countries learn how to build solar technology. They speak different languages, and many can't read. So they learn without words – with signs, colours and their own hands.

For six months Rafea solders little parts together. A film team accompanies Rafea. Her journey is later shown in the documentary "Solar Mama."

Then she returns to her village as a solar engineer. She climbs onto the roofs, mounts the panels and connects the cables.

And suddenly the families have light in the evening. Later she also shows other women how it works. So a pupil becomes a teacher.

So you don't need writing to achieve something big. Sometimes two hands and the courage to try are enough.

Hier ist das ganz normal. Alle Kellner in diesem Restaurant haben Demenz. Sie vergessen oft die Bestellung.
Das Lokal heißt „Restaurant der falschen Bestellungen“. Ungefähr ein Drittel der Bestellungen ist falsch. Aber fast alle Gäste sind glücklich.
Die Idee kommt von Shiro Oguni. Er macht Sendungen für das Fernsehen. Einmal hat er ein Heim für Menschen mit Demenz besucht.
Dort hat er etwas Wichtiges verstanden. Viele Menschen denken: Mit Demenz kann man nichts mehr machen. Aber das stimmt nicht.
Oguni will das zeigen. In seinem Restaurant arbeiten Menschen mit Demenz. Sie reden, sie lachen, und sie gehören dazu.
Eine Kellnerin sagt: „Ich kann das noch.“ Die Arbeit gibt ihr Mut. Und die Gäste verstehen Demenz besser.
Im Restaurant lachen die Gäste und die Kellner zusammen. Ein falsches Essen wird zu einem schönen Moment.
Am Ende ist die richtige Bestellung nicht so wichtig. Wichtig ist das Lächeln am Tisch.

In a restaurant in Tokyo, you order a hamburger. Then the waiter comes – and brings you a soup. But that's no problem. Here that's completely normal. All the waiters in this restaurant have dementia. They often forget the order. The place is called the "Restaurant of Mistaken Orders." About a third of the orders are wrong. But almost all the guests are happy. The idea comes from Shiro Oguni. He makes programmes for television. Once he visited a home for people with dementia. There he understood something important. Many people think: with dementia you can't do anything anymore. But that's not true. Oguni wants to show that. In his restaurant, people with dementia work. They talk, they laugh, and they belong. One waitress says: "I can still do this." The work gives her courage. And the guests understand dementia better. In the restaurant, the guests and the waiters laugh together. A wrong meal becomes a beautiful moment. In the end, the right order isn't so important. What matters is the smile at the table.
