Yesterday afternoon the FIA clearly detailed how the new ADUO mechanism actually works. Honda's in line for up to $19 million in development relief after Canada...but then I realised what Honda's own F1 project leads had been saying for months now. A careful message about who actually built the problem the FIA's now paying to fix. Honda is blaming Newey for this mess...in a corporate way.

However, the request that started this whole mess might be redeemed should the 2027 changes start to fix Formula 1. Honda may be a in good place come next year...and it won't be mainly down to the design genius who asked too much.

The Gucci-Alpine rumour sounds ridiculous at first...but it's too perfect given Enstone's F1 history since the Toleman days. With the Nurburgring announcing its 24 hours event this weekend is sold out for the first time in its history, this is the clearest sign yet that Formula 1 needs Max Verstappen more than he needs IT. Even though the sport is changing itself rapidly and his work has yielded changes back towards a more combustion-led formula one, it could be better in his eyes. Whilst Red Bull recover from their shaky start to 2026, the question of what Max does remains a huge one.

He may WANT to stay in the sport...but does he NEED to?

It's safe to say that the F1 team of Toto Wolff probably didn't see the rapid development of Kimi Antonelli play out in 2026. Not four races in with three wins and poles. On the bounce. What effect has that had on George Russell's own campaign? A case of bad luck or lost momentum? Or simply down to a matter of pace and skill...or a sign that Formula 1's "dinosaur" has made his mind up regarding the future of his Formula One operations, going into 2030...and it might not include Russell. F1 sold 2026 as the future, but just four races later, that's over. The FIA is already pulling the engine split back toward combustion for 2027. How did the 50/50 dream crack so fast?

Not only that but Formula One's CEO Domenicali and his defence missed badly and aged poorly. There's also a lot of hope for Honda out of all the events of yesterday...and if the sport still wants to be green, sustainable fuel may now be F1’s escape road instead of electricity.
