St. Louis, King of France, once paid a fortune for Christ's Crown of Thorns — then carried it home barefoot himself.
St. Louis IX ruled one of Europe's most powerful kingdoms while attending Mass twice daily and praying the full Liturgy of the Hours. When Christ's actual Crown of Thorns came up for sale in 1238, Louis paid an enormous sum for it and walked barefoot through Paris to carry it home, later building the stained-glass Sainte-Chapelle to house it. He washed the feet of lepers with his own hands.

The first saint born in the Americas, Rose of Lima spent hours each day in prayer in a tiny hermitage in her family's garden in Peru. She offered up every small suffering to Jesus, and personally cared for the sick, poor, and enslaved people that colonial Lima pushed aside — washing their wounds and feeding them with her own hands.

St. André Bessette spent 40 years answering a college door in Montreal — and thousands came seeking a miracle.
Orphaned and sickly as a child, André Bessette worked as the doorkeeper at Collège Notre-Dame for four decades, praying with the sick who came to him and pointing them to St. Joseph. So many were healed that the Church investigated — and the resulting devotion built the Oratory of St. Joseph, now the largest church in Canada. André always deflected the credit.
