Authorities say she was left sitting in the same position for so long that she developed severe medical complications, including malnutrition, infected wounds, and immobility. On their third visit in just over a week, seeing Alex in daylight for the first time, officers were confronted with a scene so horrific it stayed with them for years: Alex was skeletal, weighed under 100 pounds, and was covered in untreated burns, deep knife wounds, and bruises in every stage of healing, his body infected and his hair matted with dried blood. He was rushed to the hospital suffering from sepsis, fluid on the brain, and severed tendons, and doctors later said he was at most ten days from death. For Tiana’s family, this day marked the devastating end of a prolonged nightmare of stalking and fear. Just five weeks and two days before her murder, Tiana had been granted a restraining order against her ex-boyfriend, James Carter II. From the moment she filed for the order to the day of her death, Tiana visited the police department 33 times, desperately seeking help.
