On a Friday morning in April of 1990, a woman in Greenville, South Carolina didn't show up for work. Nobody had heard from her in almost thirty-six hours. When maintenance finally opened her apartment door, water was still running in the tub and it had overflowed into the apt. Her name was Genevieve, but everyone called her Jenny. She was twenty-eight years old, originally from Youngstown, Ohio, and she had moved to South Carolina less than two years earlier and built an entire life there from scratch. Her case went cold.However in Part ONE we found out that sixteen years later, and six hundred miles away, investigators in Portageville, Missouri, finally developed a full DNA profile in the 1998 murders of 38-year-old Sherri Scherer and her 12-year-old daughter Megan, who were killed inside their own farmhouse in a forty-minute window while the rest of the family was stuck behind a truck blocking the only road home.Missouri had spent eight years with evidence they couldn't use. When they finally entered that profile into the national database, it came back to an apartment in South Carolina. Two unsolved cases became one unsolved case. And there was still no name.

On Saturday, March 28, 1998, a mother and daughter living on a farm with their family in Portageville, Missouri, were found dead in their home. This was a farm town of about 3,300 people where nobody locked their doors because out there, whoever came up your driveway was somebody you knew or somebody who needed help.In this episode, we go through the case from the beginning. Who Sherri and Megan were, what that town was like in 1998, everything investigators found, and why a case with this much evidence went nowhere for years. This is Part One.

Today's True Crime story involves Megan Sharpton, a 24-year-old nursing student who was about to graduate. She was planning on coming to her mother's house for dinner one night AFTER she went to an in-person interview for a new job she was considered for. She left but never came back. Clues left behind led investigators in so many different directions; it was truly a very mysterious murder and NOT what anyone expected.

This case is heartbreaking. Whenever a young person has their life cut short, it's not easy to talk about. Jessica was a sophomore in high school; she was JUST starting her life. She was a gifted singer, played several musical instruments, loved cheerleading, and had just started dating her first boyfriend. Many of us can relate to Jessica in a lot of ways. That's why this one is hard to hear. She had no idea what was about to happen.
What investigators pieced together about Jessica's final moments is as heartbreaking as it is chilling. The evidence told a story of a young girl who fought with everything she had who ran, who hid, who came agonizingly close to reaching safety. But for all the clues left behind in that cemetery, one answer stayed out of reach. The prime suspect was cleared. The leads dried up. And Jessica's case went cold for years, leaving a devastated family waiting for a truth that seemed like it might never come.
